Recently all information desk staff have undergone training using the Law Handbook online. This is a valuble and extremely useful resource and most, if not all, legal questions can be answered using this.

The most common legal questions that we get at the library involve searching for a particular act (be it Federal or State); finding a Justice of the Peace or a solicitor; and where is the nearest legal aid service/centre.

Popular Magazines Plus contains a collection of full text journals from Australia and overseas. The database has a strong focus on current events, sports, science and health. For example - Choice 1999 onwards, Australian Women’s Weekly, Australian Geographic, Australian Gourmet Traveller, Australian House and Garden, Australian PC, Women’s Day and more… The database also includes the newspapers – The Australian, Herald Sun and Leader Newspapers.
To search the databases choose from Basic, Subject , Publication or Advanced Search.
Added features is being able to create RSS feeds and translate to another language.
Popular Magazine Plus is accessible from the library and from home using a Membership card number and PIN.

WHY DO WE NOT HAVE E-BOOKS AVAILABLE IN THE LIBRARY?
There are currently only selected suppliers who offer E-books for library patron use including the software to “loan” titles to library patrons. It is restrictive to commit library resources to a specific e-book format until one has emerged as a standard.

WHAT IS DRM AND HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ON E-BOOK PROVISION?
Digital rights management (DRM) is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices.

Electronic books read on a personal computer or an e-book reader typically use DRM restrictions to limit copying, printing, and sharing of e-books. E-books are usually limited to a certain number of reading devices and some e-publishers prevent any copying or printing. Some commentators believe that DRM is something that makes E-book publishing complex, particularly as different e-book reading programs use slightly different approaches to DRM.

Opposing Viewpoints

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a resource for middle to upper school students.

Opposing Viewpoints offers a range of current articles addressing issues in society, with up-to-date information from a variety of resources.

It is largely American in content, featuring a range of Gale’s reference resources, primary documents, and full-text magazines.

It offers both general and scholarly resources, government and organizational statistics, as well as multi-media records including pictures, illustrations, audio and video clips.

Search via basic/advanced searches, subject headings, or publications.

There is also a useful subject search based on the Victorian Education Curriculum and Standards Framework for Social Sciences and Science. It covers Year 6- 12.

At the top of the search results are tabs for choosing resources from: Viewpoints, Reference, Magazines, Academic Journals, News, Primary Sources, Statistics, Multimedia, and Websites.

The Viewpoints tab provides argumentative articles on the chosen subject.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center also includes a translation feature, which allows users to translate documents Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Italian, Portuguese, simplified Chinese, and Korean.

There is a toolbox link which instructs on research tools such as: how to make a concept cloud, how to build an argument, how to footnote.

Whitehorse Manningham Heritage Database

The Whitehorse Manningham Heritage Network was established in June 1997 as a collaboration between Whitehorse Manningham Regional Library Corporation, Box Hill Historical Society Inc., Doncaster-Templestowe Historical Society Inc., Warrandyte Historical Society Inc., and Whitehorse historical SocietyInc.

The aims of the Whitehorse Manningham Heritage Network are to create a local history database for the region and to develop co-operation between the local historical societies and the library in order to provide a comprehensive local history service to the communities of Whitehorse and Manningham and beyond.

The Whitehorse Manningham Heritage Database is an ongoing project with additional entries being added as catalogued. It is not yet a complete record of items held in the historical societies.

A selection of images can be viewed in database records but for most images the researcher will need to visit the society to view images.

The Whitehorse Manningham Heritage Database is the place to look for any information relating to the local area - not just 'history'.

Literature Resource Center

Literature Resource Center (LRC) is a fairly comprehensive database, useful for literary research and author biographies etc. Although it has a strong American focus, it still has some good Australian content.

LRC consists of three seperate sections which can be searched individually or as a group (which is the default setting and is the best way to go).

It is part of the Gale group of databases and is therefore easy to search and navigate.

Consumer Health Complete is an in-depth, user friendly resource designed to answer everyday consumer health questions. It covers all areas of health from mainstream medicine to alternative, holistic and integrated medicine.

Consumer Health Complete is similar in range and scope to Gale’s Health & Wellness. They both provide access to consumer health encyclopaedias and reference books, journals, pamphlets, multi-media as well as alternative health resources.

The main difference between the two, apart from the interface, is simply that each provides access to a different range of reference and journal titles. CHC supplies access to some more familiar titles such as the AMA Complete Medical Encyclopedia, Mayo Clinic Family Health Book and the Complete Guide to Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs.

The above resources can be searched individually or across the 3 at once.

The ‘New Grove dictionary of jazz’ and the ‘New Grove dictionary of opera’ are based on the print versions. These are basically static as they are not updated. You can no longer search these resources separately for articles, but links to them can be found through the results page of a general search.

ANCESTRY LIBRARY EDITION

Ancestry Library Edition is a collection of ever increasing databases in the field of genealogy. In July 2009, it included 6,328 separate databases. (It is NOT what the public commonly refers to as ‘Ancestry’ or ‘Ancestry.com, which is a pay for subscription, and which in July 2009 included 28,905 databases) As its name indicates, it is for use only in libraries, not remotely. Ancestry Library Edition includes the most commonly used databases in Ancestry.com, including birth, death and marriage records, census returns, and immigration records. Australian material is being added constantly, but at the moment, the major areas represented are the USA and Great Britain. Most of our patrons use the British and Australian records.

In the top right hand corner of the home page, there is a link to Help, and inside this, another link to Learning Center. There are many pages of FAQ’s, but they are difficult to search.
More useful is the listing of recent databases, found near the bottom of the home page under More Collections. Here there is a list of databases added in the past 2 months, arranged by date added. However, the geographic listing of databases is much more useful; under the Search tab, click on a geographic area ie UK and Ireland, then England, and view the titles which are arranged into broad subject groupings such as Immigration and Emigration.

Searching is more successful if the Search tab is used, not the Home tab. This is because a search made from Home searches all databases. Once in the Search tab, don’t use the drop down menu, just click on Search, drill down geographically, and then select one specific database, and search only within that.

The Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre combines Australasian magazines, newspaper (including local Leader newspapers), newswires, and reference books. Many are full text and includes an image collection of photos, maps and flags.

Masterfile provides full text articles from general periodicals covering reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues etc. Although American in content it is still a useful general reference database.

These two databases from Ebsco can be searched individually or as a combination. For general knowledge and reference questions (not forgetting newspaper articles) these databases should be your first stop.

Fiction Connection is a database covering American fiction titles, biographies, autobiographies and memoirs. The database is updated monthly.

Titles go back to 1997. Older titles by popular authors, classics and titles have been retained, including out of print titles. Source - popular review journals, publishers catalogues, authors websites and newspaper reviews.

This is a handy Reader Development tool, giving the librarian and patron the opportunity to search for a list of books by topic, genre, character, setting, timeframe or location, or a specific title, author or ISBN. To obtain a full listing under each tab, click, 'click here to view all topics' .

Find similar authors for books that you enjoyed. Simply type in the book title, then click 'find similar.' For more refined searches also use the left handside green menu.

Books & Authors was formerly known as What do I read next?

The original intention of the database was to provide titles and authors that correspond to a similar theme, setting or context.

The new version has now expanded its content by integrating author, title, series and genre information from other Gale reference publications.

A typical enquiry in Books & Authors usually starts with a title search. From here the user can read a summary of the book and then explore the tabs associated with that title; such as author information, book reviews and read-a-likes.

It should be noted that Books & Authors is a new database with a lot of potential. However, in its first year, it is still a ‘work in progress’ and unfinished in parts. Many author and title entries are yet to be added.

Nonetheless, it is still a useful readers’ advisory tool. The 'read-a-likes' feature alone can be invaluable as a guide in providing 'follow-up' reading to favourite books and authors.

Bookclubs and reading groups should find the reviews and critical articles useful for book discussions and the range of information will suit students and professionals, or the casual reader.

Books and Authors also includes features such as Award Winners, Expert Picks and “Who, What, Where, When?” that enables the user to search by character, subject, location and time period.

GBIP is a comprehensive database for bibliographic information of books, audio books and video titles.
Also accessible through GBIP is Fiction Connection and Non-fiction Connection. This is covered in a separate training blog.

For Suggested Purchases use Global Books in Print to verify bibliographic details of an item. You can simply cut and paste the details to the Suggested Purchase form.

A Quick Search may provide a full description of the title, title reviews, publisher information, other formats, stock availability, table of contents. Sometimes an author biography is included. There is also the option to sort by relevance, date, publisher, market.

Important - Stock Availability status.

1. If there is no Stock Availability tab the item is not available - do not send through order.

2. If the entry says 'readily available' don't believe it until you have looked further.

3. Click on Stock Availability tab - if there are copies listed for Baker and Taylor, it is most likely available.

4. If there are a number of copies showing available with other publishers, it may be available and we can possibily order through DLS.

5. If there are no copies under the supplier information, the item is not available - do not order.

6. DLS is a warehouse, so number of copies will not be indicated. They will order items in from other publishers on our behalf. If DLS is listed, send order through - it may be available.

Market - Do not send through items for order where market is Canada, New Zealand or South Africa. Where you have a choice, always choose the 'Australia' market.

Britannica Online Library Edition has 3 versions. These can be searched individually or can be searched at the one time using search all library editions.
'Access articles, select journal and magazines, web sites, atlases, timelines and videos. The features tabs and level of content will vary depending on the encyclopedia version you choose.

1. Encyclopedia Britannica Traditional version. In this version only, you can find the Year in review to access almanac type information i.e. notable people and events.
2. Britannica Student Suitable for secondary student level.
3. Britannica Junior Suitable for primary school level or overview articles.

Additional features -World atlas: physical and political maps. Outlines government, language, major cities, related articles and maps. Timelines, videos, and subject browse is available in the three versions. Biographies are available in student and junior version only.

General OneFile, is a large general database, similar to but larger than Masterfile Premier. It has more than 11,000 journal titles (over 60 million articles), including a significant collection of Australian titles, some dating as far back as 1980.

General OneFile is our electronic access to Choice magazine and also gives full-text access to many key titles including Art & Australia, Australian Library Journal and the Australian Journal of Early Childhood, as well as more popular magazines including Australian Geographic, Cosmopolitan and more.

Due to the wide ranging content, General OneFile could be used for patrons requiring Choice articles or content related to their hobbies and interests, as well as secondary and tertiary level students requiring articles for their coursework.
